Infiltrating strategy into everything you do
By: Alicia Beard, WildRock Account Manager
Every once in awhile the WildRock team will take a moment to step back from the whirlwind of projects and to-do lists to reflect on why we do what we do. It seems simple enough, but the clarity around your company values, or pillars as we refer to them, is the skeleton that holds your organization together. At WildRock, those pillars are creativity, strategy and practicality, and taking time to come back to these fundamentals is an important exercise in being able to produce results that tie directly back to your organization’s goals. This brings me to the larger topic of conversation for today’s post— infiltrating strategy into everything you do.
From a dictionary definition, strategy means creating and executing a careful plan to achieve a particular goal, generally over a long period of time. Applying this to your business, and specifically your PR and marketing efforts, means first taking the time to outline your long-term business goals. Once that’s complete, we recommend you take the time to ensure success by aligning your PR and marketing objectives to your business goals. Here’s some good questions to ask:
- What is management trying to achieve?
- Who are our priority stakeholders?
- What are our key messages?
- What response or outcomes do we want?
- What does success look like?
- What’s our timeframe?
- What has hindered our efforts in the past?
- What are our competitors doing?
Only after answering these questions and removing any barriers, should you begin selecting which PR and marketing channels and tactics will help you accomplish your goals.
When WildRock launches a PR or marketing plan, strategy is always at the forefront of the discussion. For example, if you are a tech startup that is looking to reach C-level executives to spur business development, then your PR and marketing plan must be tailored accordingly with messaging that speaks to solutions, value and efficiency with time and money. From there, you can create tactics for getting you brand and message in front of these C-level execs by engagement through personalization and thought leadership initiatives.
Reflecting on infiltrating strategy into everything we do means taking a step back to ask yourself if you are “flying by the seat of your pants,” or confronting new opportunities and challenges with an eagle eye on long-term strategy. Where are areas that may warrant a time-out to define what your end goals are, and then map out a thoughtful strategy of how to get there?
